ABOUT ABOUT

Since the city’s founding, “home” in Philadelphia has been synonymous with “rowhouse.” Since this year's DesignPhiladelphia theme is "home" the Design Advocacy Group (DAG) and PlanPhilly are looking back at three centuries of rowhouse development and asking: What constitutes ideal rowhouse design for the 21st century? Are the rowhouses going up today the right size? Are they sustainable and durable? Does context matter? Join us for a “Design Matters” conversation looking back at the history of the venerable rowhouse and ahead to assess contemporary rowhouse design.

Architectural historian Jeff Cohen will offer perspective on the long history of the Philadelphia rowhouse and PlanPhilly's editor Ashley Hahn will discuss what the future of the rowhouse might look like with architects Cecil Baker (Cecil Baker + Partners), Brian Phillips (ISA), and Kiki Bolender (Bolender Architects; Healthy Rowhouse Project). Winners of the 21st century rowhouse design competition will also be recognized.

Reception starts at 5:30pm. Panel begins at 6:30pm.

Design Matters is an event series co-produced by PlanPhilly and the Design Advocacy Group.
